“True peace is not merely the absence of war, it is the presence of justice.”
-Jane Addams
Australian Peacekeeping
Australia has been involved in peacekeeping since 1947. In this time 65,000 men and women have served as peacekeepers and 14 have lost their lives.
Our first peacekeepers were deployed to what is now Indonesia. There they stood between hostile armies, treated casualties, cleared landmines and helped to deliver or make possible humanitarian aid as well as many other services. Their dedication on the front between Netherlanders and East Indian Republicans was the first mission of its kind and these missions have continued down through the generations into what we today call Peacekeeping.
St Philomena School and Peacekeeping
We are a small Prep to 12 school of around 300 in outer suburban Brisbane, and we were inspired by the stories of our Australian Peacekeepers. We have tried to convey the pride we feel through our own poems, written pieces and drawings, and want to raise awareness for these amazing men and women making the world a better place.
